What it does
SimpleIn a fox hunt, one person hides a little radio that beeps every so often (the 'fox'), and everyone else uses antennas to track it down. This app can be that hidden beeper. It's one of the best outdoor games for learning how to follow a signal to its source.
Paired with the Level app and a directional antenna, players get warmer and warmer as they home in on the hidden fox — real-life 'hotter/colder' with radio.
How it works
SimpleThe hidden radio sends a short beep or callsign every little while. Seekers point a directional antenna around and watch a strength meter — the beep is loudest when the antenna points at the fox. By taking a few readings from different spots, they can figure out where the fox must be hiding.
How to use it, step by step
Simple- With a licensed adult, hide the beeping device.
- Open 'Fox Hunt' and start the beacon.
- Set how often it beeps.
- Other players use the Level app and an antenna to find it.
Examples
Run a radio-club direction-finding contest with a hidden beacon and multiple seekers.
Show how two or three bearings from different spots pinpoint the fox.
Use the hunt to demonstrate how a directional antenna's pattern reveals direction.
Tips & things to try
- Lower beacon power makes for a harder, more interesting hunt.
- Seekers should take bearings from several spots — one reading isn't enough to triangulate.
- It's the perfect partner to the Level app and a cheap Yagi.
